Arranging Video Game Music

For those who may not know, I’m Chris Pasillas, and I performed on the piano and transcribed and arranged nearly all of the music for Hideo. Besides being the music director and a resident pianist for our group, I’m somewhat of a chocolate connoisseur, and I spend my weekdays programming.

Most all video game music has one thing in common upon release: none of it has been arranged for the right group of musicians to make an effective and logistically doable (i.e. no symphonies) stage performance. In Hideo land, this also includes being arranged to both match the musical resources we have as well as the particular sound required for our storyline.  Wouldn’t it be great, though, if we had sheet music arrangements for all of our favorite video game tunes?

Actually, there are many websites dedicated to remixing and arranging music from video games. The venerable OverClocked ReMix focuses on creating new digital media from well-known classics, though this doesn’t scratch the itch of amateur and professional performers to actually create this music. Live performances of the tunes you love bring it to an entirely new level for performer and audience alike. Luckily, there are sites that can help!

A quick Google search and a dig inside my memory bring a few examples to light: Piano Squall, gamemusicthemes.com, and one of our Hideo performers, Sebastian Wolff. These people are fighting what, in my mind, is the good fight in terms of video game music. There is plenty to consume nowadays in terms of media, why not make producers out of everyone as well?
